Know Your Wardrobe

A wardrobe is the second most important piece of furniture in your bedroom (the 1st being the bed obviously!). Whether you are renovating your house or moving into a new one, you ought to know everything possible about wardrobes, so you can choose the best one for your house.

In this blog, we will discuss all essential wardrobe features that will guide you towards the wardrobe of your dream.

Essential Wardrobe Features to Know About.

1.   Material Used to Make Your Wardrobe

A wardrobe is made up of two parts- the carcass (body) and the shutter. Most of the time the material used for the carcass is either solid wood or engineered wood. Examples of engineered wood include plywood or MDF (medium particle fibreboard). Since plywood tends to cave after some time, we recommend you to go for MDF material.

Other engineered materials used for wardrobes include particleboard, and glass. Particleboard is engineered from waste wood chips and sawdust and even costs less than plywood and MDF. However, it is not as strong as plywood and MDF.

Opaque and colored glasses are also increasingly used for the wardrobe body. They open up the space and make your room look elegant and big.

Traditional solid wood wardrobes are always in fashion, however since they use real timber extracted by cutting our precious forests, we do not recommend it. They are also costlier than engineered wood and need more maintenance.

2.   Ideal Height of Your Wardrobe

Typically, a wardrobe should not be higher than 7- 8 feet. However, wardrobes are of different types. The height of your wardrobe should depend on the type of wardrobe you want to install in your bedroom.

  • A sliding wardrobe has front panels that slide gently to open it. A sliding wardrobe should have the standard dimensions starting from a width of six feet up to 12 feet depending upon your floor plan, family size, and requirements.

  • A hinged wardrobe is the most popular and easy-to-maintain wardrobe. It has 2 doors and is supported by hinges. You can get a full floor-to-ceiling wardrobe or can match the height of the wardrobe with that of the door to create perfect symmetry in the room.

  • A walk-in closet is a fancy luxury wardrobe that is a room in itself. If you do not have much space in your walk-in closet, use a sliding door for it. It will free some space and make your wardrobe look bigger.

3.   Wardrobe Closing Mechanism

Your wardrobe closing mechanism is also an essential feature of your wardrobe design. The following are the two most commonly used wardrobe closing mechanisms.

  • Self-closing hinges- These hinges work on a spring-based mechanism whereby the doors can self-close themselves after the door is closed to some extent. They are an affordable option. However, they close with a slam or a tap and can be dangerous for kids who end up putting their fingers between the doors.

  • Soft closing hinges- These hinges close softly without a slam and are more child-friendly. They may be costlier than self-closing hinges but they extend the life of your wardrobe as doors are not slammed regularly.

4.   Your Wardrobe Accessories

If you choose your wardrobe accessories with caution, you may be able to declutter your wardrobe and make wardrobe organization easy for yourself. The following are some must-have wardrobe accessories today.

  • Drawer Organizers

If there is something that you absolutely need in your wardrobe, it is drawers for shoes, jewellery, and those small accessories that tend to get lost right at the moment that you need them the most!

  • A Shoe Rack

Install a pull-out shoe rack in your wardrobe to keep your shoes in good condition. This will also reduce the amount of time you spend on your footwear maintenance since it will become a part of your wardrobe.

  • Hanging Space

For clothes that get spoiled when folded, you need to have space to hang them. Hanging spaces generally come on the upper side of the wardrobe.

  • Sensor Lights

Wardrobe lights are essential to highlight the highest and the lowest points of your wardrobe, so you can see the materials you have in different places. You can go for a soft LED light that is rechargeable, or you can also go for a closet motion sensor light that automatically turns on when it detects you.

Tips to Care for Your Wardrobe

Getting a wardrobe is only the 1st step, maintaining the elegance of your new wardrobe is the real challenge. We have listed a few tips that will come in handy for taking care of your wardrobe.

  • Try not to mop near your wardrobe with a lot of water, since most of the woods can absorb water. This can ruin your wardrobe material.

  • Clean up your wardrobe with a vacuum cleaner every 3-4 months. Use a cotton cloth to wipe every part of the wardrobe, including hangers, rails, and drawers.

  • You can also use a vinegar solution for cleaning the inside of your wardrobe. This helps in getting rid of any mold or mildew if present.

  • Invest in mothballs and other such scented products that help in getting rid of any creepy insects that may make your wardrobe its home.

To Sum It Up

A wardrobe shows your personality. It is not just about the functionality but the overall appearance as well. Plan a good wardrobe design with the help of a specialist. Consider your lifestyle, budget as well as wardrobe's utility while making your decision. After all, you do not buy such custom furniture every month!
